The historical photography process of gum bichromate photography uses gum arabic mixed with ammonium or potassium dichromate and pigment to create a coloured photographic emulsion that becomes relatively insoluble in water upon exposure to ultraviolet light. In the final print, the acacia gum permanently binds the pigments onto the paper.

Bellini Pyrocarechin/Catechol 100g Catechol Pyrocatechin, also known as Pyrocatechin and Pyrocatechol, is used as a developing agent for film or paper. It gives warm black images, with rapid development and high contrast. Pyrocatechin also acts as a tanning developer, which stains (actually fogs) the negative and also hardens the emulsion protecting it from reticulation.

Ferrous sulfate is mainly used as a precursor to other iron compounds. It is a reducing agent, and as such is useful for the reduction of chromate in cement to less toxic Cr(III) compounds. Historically ferrous sulfate was used in the textile industry for centuries as a dye fixative. It is used historically to blacken leather and as a constituent of ink. The preparation of sulfuric acid ('oil of vitriol') by the distillation of green vitriol (Iron(II) sulfate) has been known for at least 700 years.

Sodium carbonate is also used in a photographic process known as reticulation. A film negative can be placed in a hot bath of sodium carbonate which may cause the metallic silver to clump and the emulsion to separate from the base of the film, producing a cracked and abstracted image. Sodium carbonate is also used by the brick industry as a wetting agent to reduce the ammount of water needed to extrude the clay.
